STEPHEN HOGGER

 

Stephen Hogger was born in 1959 in Stowmarket, Suffolk and held the post of organist at the Parish Church before moving to Ipswich to combine the organists positions at St Augustines Church and Ipswich Crematorium.

He later moved to Colchester and gained an honours degree in music at the Institute, specialising in Christian Liturgical Music and studying organ with Harrison Oxley and John Cooper. Whilst at Colchester he also studied singing and sang leading roles in operettas by Gilbert and Sullivan and Offenbach.

After graduating he became assistant music teacher and school organist at Brentwood Ursuline Convent High School for five years before moving to Chandos Records where he was involved in music publishing, copyright and preparing many hitherto unperformed works for recording. He has edited many works by Johann Nepomuk Hummel including 4 Masses, several Piano Concertos and completing the Violin Concerto in collaboration with the Conductor/Pianist Howard Shelley.

His suites from the film music of Stanley Black were recorded by the BBC Concert Orchestra and his work on the music of Ralph Vaughan Williams includes suites from 7 of the 10 film scores (recorded by the BBC Philharmonic), completing the 2nd Norfolk Rhapsody and a performing edition of the London Symphony in its original 1913 edition (London Symphony Orchestra). The latter winning the coveted Gramaphone Recording of the Year Award.

He is Director of Music at Lavenham Parish Church and works as a freelance musician and editor. In his spare time he breeds foreign finches, composes, and also enjoys cooking and gardening.
